The Geopolitics of Aid to Education: From Cold Wars to Holy Wars

15 October 2009 (Block 2: Governing Human Capabilities)

About the lecture:
This lecture will explore the geography of aid to education and raise questions as to whether development aid, and education aid in particular, is becoming increasingly focused on conflict and post-conflict countries and the implications of this shift. Located within the emerging subfield of education and conflict, the presentation will seek to provide a framework for understanding the relationship between education and conflict and focus in on the dynamics of how educational aid appears to be becoming increasingly politicized and militarised. This links up with broader debates within the field of development studies on the ‘militarization of development’ while attempting to shed light on the specificity of how ‘educational aid’ becomes caught up in this process.
