The 20th century rush for blue gold; crisis and opportunity in fisheries of the South

10 September 2009 (Block 1: Governing Natural Resources)

About the lecture:
This lecture will consider the marine fisheries of the South in the context of industrialization, globalization and ecological crisis. It emphasizes the dichotomy which has come about between a modern, large-scale fishery on the one hand, and a very sizeable small-scale fishery on the other, and enquires into governance solutions which are specifically relevant to developing countries. Any such solution is argued to direct itself not only to ecological, but also to social realities and perceptions of fairness. After all, sustainability is also a matter of justice and legitimacy.
